FILM REVIEW
5 stars
Action, Crime, Thriller
This film is a masterpiece. Vol 1 introduces the plot – The Bride is attacked by the Deadly Vipers Assassination Squad at her wedding. All in attendance are killed and the Bride becomes comatose for four years. Upon waking up, it’s her unborn child’s fate that spurs her to hunt down the assassins that attacked her.
The Bride is perfectly portrayed by Uma Thurman. She is a ruthless killer, yes, but despite her claims that she isn’t merciful, she shows her human side again and again. Even if her actions seem overly cruel, it’s those little cracks in her steely facade (and those clever little lines) that keep the audience rooting for her.
Tarantino uses every storytelling technique available; there is an extended animated scene, long takes, coloured filters, and so on. There’s also quite an eclectic mix of songs used as part of the soundtrack. It’s used perfectly – it highlights the subtly comic parts and contrasts with the more tense parts to amp up the thrill. There is obviously a lot of action in Kill Bill. It’s so intense but doesn’t feel like overkill at any point. There are also a lot of unexpected things, it keeps the tension high all the way through.
In conclusion, this film is brilliantly well-made and definitely a must-watch.
